Q: How long will you keep my file?
A: I keep an edited document for a standard 60-day period, but I will keep it for either more or less time by your request.
Q: Will I get an invoice?
A: Generally, I will give out invoices unless you have instructed me otherwise. The invoice can be used in your records as a receipt for tax purposes. Click here to see a sample.
Q: Are you a registered business?
A: I am registered as a sole-proprietorship in the province of Ontario under the name Elemental Editing; this registration is valid until July 15th, 2020. I am also currently applying for a trademark on that name.
Q: Do you charge HST?
A: No, I do not. Since I am only starting as a small business, I am not legally obligated at this point to charge HST. If this changes, I will be sure to inform all of my clients ahead of time.
Q: Do you offer your services outside of Toronto?
A: I offer my editing services to any person within Ontario, as stipulated by my Master Business License.
Q: How did you come up with your pricing?
A: My pricing is slightly lower than standard freelance pricing as recommended by the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) and the Editors’ Association of Canada (EAC). I choose to offer smaller rates and monthly promotions in order to build a reliable client base. Click here to view our standard pricing.
Q: Are you hiring?
A: At this time, demand has allowed me to be the primary and sole editor for Elemental Editing. If this should ever change, I will advertise for new staff.
Q: Why is there a Same-Day Fee?
A: I work full-time as an editor in the Financial District, in addition to running this business, so my schedule requires organization and forethought. Occasionally, last-minute projects fit perfectly into my schedule by coincidence, but to ensure that I can get to every project, I ask that I receive more than one day’s notice. If that is not possible, I then ask to be compensated for the inconvenience.
Q: Do you meet clients in person?
A: If you happen to be in Toronto and you wish to meet with me, I can certainly do my best to make that happen. That being said, I will not travel outside the GTA. If it is imperative that you talk to me, we can set up a phone call or a Skype session.
Q: How do I know that you will actually edit my document?
A: I make it my business to keep up correspondence with my clients in order to reassure them of my commitment. Once the document is done, I send a two-page screenshot (along with an invoice for proof of purchase) to the client in order to show that changes have been made and to allow them to get an idea of the quality of my work. Once they send the payment, I send the full file to them along with any additional comments.
Q: What kind of payment do you take?
A: I take e-Transfer (with the password provided to me ahead of time), Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Paypal.
